In the mid 1950s few people in the U.S. had ever heard of Hilton Head Island, South Carolinathe second largest barrier island on the East coast, with 12 miles of unspoiled Atlantic beaches. A young Charles Fraser, however, had big plans for this beautiful Lowcountry paradise, characterized by serene tidal marshlands, ancient moss-draped oaks, a variety of subtropical palms, and an abundance of delicious shell-fish and other salt-water seafood, along with sail-boating, yachting and world-class deep-sea fishing. For good measure, add a mild subtropical climate and you have the perfect ingredients for one of the top 10 golf, tennis and beach destinations in the world. Thus, when the first bridge connecting Hilton Head Island to the mainland opened in the late ‘50s the stage was set for steady, but quality-controlled, growth of luxury ocean-side resorts and private, upscale golf communities. Currently, the island has nearly 35,000 full and part-time residents, and when the resorts are over-flowing during peak seasons, more than 50,000 people celebrate life on this model resort and residential haven. Founded and developed by Fraser circa 1960, Sea Pines was Hilton Head’s first resort and residential community and was later joined by Palmetto Dunes and Shipyard Plantation as the Island’s major ocean-front resorts. |
